January Arty Farty Challenge.

Image
Hey guys, Here is my January Arty Farty Challenge. It is designed not for competition, but to get your new year off to an abundant and creative start. So here's what will happen.  Every day. You need to create a new piece. Sketch? Painting? Sculpture? Anyone these is fine. Try to stretch yourself. While this is a daily challenge, if you miss a day because life gets in the way, it doesn't matter. Let's all aim for 31 different entries by Jan 31.  You need to post your work, along with size and rough description on The White Arts Facebook page timeline. I will then create a daily blogpost featuring every single one of you. In turn, you can share from my page and blog and I am quite confident that by the end of January, we will all have had a bucketload of exposure all while improving our skills.  Please share my posts about this challenge on your own pages and get a few more involved.  Thanks a million Tony.  Www.Facebook.com/thewhitearts  Www,Thewhitearts.ne...

My Materials. Part 1. The Holy Trinity.

Image
What’s on my Pallet? I’m glad you asked. I’ve had some people wanting some tutorial stuff and demos around techniques etc. I’ll be getting to those very shortly but in the meantime I figured that I’d show you all my materials and pallet. Please check out my Website , facebook , twitter  and Etsy shop.   T he holy trinity. PAPER    BRUSHES   PAINTS Paper I’ve tried 90% of the options out there and I’m afraid to say that there is only one paper that works for me. Arches. This just happens to be the most expensive option but realistically, I am a firm believer that if you want to progress with your work, you need to be fussy with materials. I would order them in this order of importance… Paper, paints, then brushes. I’ve settled into Arches 300gsm Rough paper in either natural or bright white. It takes a beating and a soaking and always dries pretty much flat. The texture is great for doing smooth washes to sparkling water and such fr...

The 30/30 challenge is done and dusted!

Image
Well, it is over. The 30 paintings in 30 days challenge has come and gone and I must say that I am more than a little relieved. I am sick of painting rivers. Haha. I cannot wait to get stuck into some different subject matter and see how the skills have come along in that time. When I stop and think about painting,I do feel more confident in my general ability to make it work but I guess we'll see.  So how did the paintings end up? Overall, I reckon I had about 60% of the 30'paintings that I ended up happy with. I learned to work a lot more loose and quickly which resulted in some great moments but overall I still found that my tendency to "fiddle" was still prevelant so I did lose some of those moments too.  I found the challenge fun but somewhat stressful in as far as feeling a little pressure to get the work done. My wife is happy that it is over. Haha.  What would I do differently next time?  I think I wouldn't narrow myself into a theme. I thought it'd m...

We're up to day 21.

So, just like the last update, life has gotten in the way a bit but I've still managed to put up a completed work every day, with varying degrees of quality. :) ha Learning to work quickly and loosely will no doubt be a fantastic advantage when it comes to completing studied works in the near future. What are your favourites on the pics I've posted here so far? Check out my Facebook site ! Check out my Website ! Check out the 30 in 30 website  ! Thanks guys. Tony

Days 5,6,7,8 & 9 of the 30/30 challenge

Image
Well!!! Woweee!!! It has been a big week. My Facebook page has gone from 300 followers a week ago to nudging 4000 as I write this. I participated in my first ever painting workshop with Malcolm Carver. It was amazing but I'll talk a bit more about that in a future post. It deserves more time than this little post. So, the 30 in 30 challenge is in full swing. I've managed to keep up so far with varying degrees of success. I guess the main thing is that I'm putting in the hours and that is gradually translating into more confident work. What are your thoughts? Here are the latest ones. Please visit my Facebook Page and Website. Thanks.

30/30 Days 3 and 4.

Image
Howdy, SO, I went into this challenge with the idea of using up old scraps of paper/offcuts etc... This is a great idea when I'm talking about my usual top quality paper (usually Arches 300gsm Rough), but when I've tried to paint on some old rubbishy cheap WC paper, the results are horrendous... so, USE GOOD PAPER!!!! I cannot stress this enough. :)  Anyway, here are my entries for days 3 and 4 of the challenge. Enjoy... and don't forget to visit my Facebook page and give it a LIKE and a SHARE too.....  Thanks a million. Tony The Mississippi Saskatchewan

30 Paintings Days 1 and 2.

Image
Hey Guys, I just thought I'd bunch a few of these up at a time, but here's my first post with them so I've got my first 2 paintings for yas.  The challenge is incredibly inspiring and the response I've had so far has been nothing short amazing. My Facebook page has started to take off and the audience is building. Incredibly cool.  As you know, my theme for the challenge is Rivers of the World. Here are The Murray River and The River Seine.  Thanks a million and once again, if you'd like to buy either of them or any other work that takes your fancy, please inbox me on my  facebook page or email me at thewhitearts@gmail.com   Thanks a million.  Tony The Murray River The Seine

30 Paintings in 30 Days

Image
Hi guys, I've decided to bite the bullet and sign up for Leslie Saeta's 30 in 30 Challenge for September. I'd recommend to give it a go. I'm looking forward to it a great deal and am keen to see some progression in that time. I've chosen a theme of "Rivers of the World". I think the theme will make it easier to prepare for and really see some advancement in technique when tackling the same kind of subject matter over and over. I'm going to choose various sizes along the way too. I figure is way ill use up scrappy smaller pieces of paper that are laying around as well as some larger works. I plan to keep them very loose and lively and I'll try not to get bogged down in detail. This should be a great learning curve and an excellent way of connecting with the worldwide art community and ultimately, increase the fan base to hopefully sell more work and step away from the day job.. Aaaaaah we can dream!  Check out the link to the site that has al...

Selling your Art

Image
G'day People, Just a quick note to let you know that I've set up an ArtPal gallery where you can purchase prints and originals of a few of my works. I'll be putting more up just as soon as I get the images. Thanks for looking. Do you sell your art online? If so, do you use ArtPal or another platform? How have you found it? Do you find some things work spectacularly and others fail?  Please feel free to share any hints or tips in the comments section either in here or the Facebook page. I love being part if a sharing community of artists and art-lovers. :) Cheers Tony My Artpal Gallery My Facebook Page

A Few New Works. Traditional.

Image
Aaaah... Back to the real stuff.. :)  I've had a few commissions recently which is great. I'm starting to get cracking on a body of cohesive work to sell online and perhaps even approach a gallery one day in the future.  Here are a few recent ones. Sorry for the pic of the one in the frame. I was rushed and purely took the pic as it was heading out the door. Dammit. :)  Thanks for reading, Tony

A Few New Works - Digital.

Image
Hey Y'All, Sorry it has been a while. I've been busy with life in general. Still doing a lot of drawing and painting though. I'm trying to build up a body of work to develop an Online sales presence. It is a lot of work but I'm sure it will pay off eventually. Imagine being able to quit your day-job to paint!!! That is the goal anyway.. :)   So, I've recently bought my first iPad and I must say, I'm impressed! I originally only wanted it as a reference guide for my locations and photo storage etc, but I've discovered the somewhat dubious world of digital art. I bought the Procreate app and have been slowly getting used to this other art form. I do believe it is somewhat of a cheat but it serves as fantastic and convenient practice as well. I've gotten a few decent results out of it but nothing beats the real thing. After using the app for a few days, I found myself reaching for the 'UNDO' button when I made a false stroke on an actual ...

Tryng to emulate the greats.

Howdy, After receiving Joseph's Book, I decided to run through one of his step-by-step paintings to see if anything could be learned. I was a bit sceptical based on not wanting to 'copy' as such, but boy was  I wrong? It is an invaluable lesson. Reading though his steps is like being taught by the man himself.I strongly   urge anyone to try to do as many of these exercises as they can. I'll be doing more, that is for sure. Here is my first attempt. Not too shabby. I think it'll really help in development of colour harmony and composition. Fantastic fun.. What do you think? Zbukvic's is on the left of course.

The Watercolour Bible has arrived

Image
Today I received my copy of Joseph Zbukvic's 'Mastering Atmosphere and Mood in Watercolour'. For those in the know, this book is rare an heavily sought-after. Some have fetched up to $900 online in recent times. Amazon's current listing is $200-odd for a ratty, beaten-up copy. So how did I come by this? About a month ago, I did a search for 'Zbukvic' on eBay. I was looking for brushes. What I saw was like a mirage. A desert oasis shining at me like bright afternoon sun hitting my eyes from glare from the surface of my painting water-bucket. The listing had the book's condition as 'USED' but in decent condition. I struggled to come to terms with what was in front of me. I couldn't quite believe it. It was listed at $69.99 AUD.  WOW! Holy WOW!  I decided just to go for it. If it was a scam, then I'd lose my cash and go home with my  tail between the cheeks, but if not, then I'd be ecstatic. This book is the holy grail of watercol...

Winterlude - 10 Years On

Image
I was fortunate enough to travel a couple of hours down the freeway to Sydney last week to check out an exhibition of work from five fantastic artists, three of which are among my absolute favourites.  In the Winterlude exhibit, held at Artarmon Galleries, you get to peruse the work of Joseph Zbukvic, Herman Pekel, Alvaro Castagnet, Nic Canosa and Patrick Carroll. What can I say? The work was both beyond inspirational and in some cases, beyond amazing. Incredible. Having only seen their work on computer and TV screens up to this point, it was truly an eye-opener to see them in the flesh. The detail (or lack there of) that you miss on the screen is what makes all the difference. What I mean by that is the middle ground detail in a lot of their work is all based around correct perspective and tone. The detail of a crowded cafe, for example, is merely a combination of brush strokes and shapes made with the right tones and the right proportions. It is staggering at how important the ...
