Tryng to emulate the greats.

Howdy,

After receiving Joseph's Book, I decided to run through one of his step-by-step paintings to see if anything could be learned. I was a bit sceptical based on not wanting to 'copy' as such, but boy was  I wrong? It is an invaluable lesson. Reading though his steps is like being taught by the man himself.I strongly   urge anyone to try to do as many of these exercises as they can. I'll be doing more, that is for sure. Here is my first attempt. Not too shabby. I think it'll really help in development of colour harmony and composition. Fantastic fun.. What do you think?

    Very interesting results! The style is your own, but the mood and atmosphere are so similar. I'm intrigued to try to find a copy of this book! Have you read "Steal Like an Artist" by Austin Kleon? There are some interesting bits about the learning benefits of copying your hero's work. Thanks for sharing!

      Thank you. It is handy trying to emulate the greats, thats for sure. I haven't read that book but I'll be sure to check it out. Zbukvic's book is fantastic. I was fortunate enough to travel a couple of hours down the freeway to Sydney last week to check out an exhibition of work from five fantastic artists, three of which are among my absolute favourites.  In the Winterlude exhibit, held at Artarmon Galleries, you get to peruse the work of Joseph Zbukvic, Herman Pekel, Alvaro Castagnet, Nic Canosa and Patrick Carroll.
