Forums and why they can be a help…. and a hindrance.

Image
We all like to get our art seen and hopefully appraised by our peers and idols. I have been a part of a few forums with some great advice being handed out along with a whole barrage of useless chaff. Here are my observations. 1: The helpful, honest critique. Like a fat supermodel, this is a rare breed and just like those rare breeds, they are warm, cuddly and inherently beautiful. They offer insight into the techniques, composition and theory behind the work that is being presented. Tips on what might help you achieve a more coherent work in the future are well appreciated and ultimately what we are looking for. Bring these ones on! They are the shiz! Fat supermodels rock! 2: The Over-praiser. I have put some dogs of drawings and paintings on forums in my time. Some of which may appeal to the few that are into them. It IS a subjective field afterall. The people who say glowing things about everything you put up, while nice enough, offer no real insight into what can be improved u...

A quiet week.

Image
After being a bit crook last week, I've had a real quiet one this week. Work and not much else. Today is ANZAC day here is Australia. A public holiday, but yep, I'm off to work. ANZAC day is always quiet at work so fingers crossed I'll finally get into my Turner book. I basically know the broad strokes of his story but I hope to get a few details into my memory bank. He is my favourite and I know that is a hard thing to pinpoint but no other work gets me like his. I don't like photo-realism in painting. I reckon you should just go take a photo. Sure I get the talent and patience it would take to achieve the results but for me, it just seems a waste. I like vibe. I like atmosphere. I like it when you can look at it and imagine yourself there. Not in a wanky art way, but my yardstick is always that if I walk past a painting, it suggests that it doesn't grab me. If I involuntarily stop to linger, then it works for me. I'm not into fancy wording or similes or hyperb...

Top 10 Characteristics of an Art Snob

Image
This one isn't my story but I couldn't have said it better myself. More on this topic to come, I'm sure. Thanks to Dick Van Vector for the words. The Link to the original story is at the bottom of the post. Cheers...    TW Don't think that racist-rednecks and sports jocks exhaust the landscape of jerkery. The artsy-fartsy genera also boasts its share of loudmouthed puffery. If you want to smell the foul effluvia of this intellectualistic puffery, a great place to go is to an art gallery. At art galleries, you are likely to find a certain type of person, who I am calling the 'Art Snob.' Art Snobs are true jerks. In fact, at the relatively-pompous Edinburgh National Gallery in Scotland, I saw more than a fair flock of Art Snobs, and after giving it some thought, I came up with a few features that seem to unify this self-righteous cabal. 10.  Turtlenecks . Summer is hot and sweaty, but the Art Snob will probably wear a turtleneck anyway. Though a lot of pe...

Welcome to The White Arts Blog

Hello there and welcome to what I hope will become one of your favourite Blogs. My name is Tony White, from Newcastle, Australia. I thought I'd introduce myself and let you know where this Blog has had its genesis. I'm 38 Years old and have always drawn and/or painted with varied success for as long as I can remember. I'm not the most naturally talented when it comes to art so I have to work hard for every good result that I get with the hope that it will eventually come to me without so much research and hard work. I'm not much of a draughtsman but I'm learning. Over the years, I've dabbled in most forms of painting. Far too impatient for oils (although I LOVE them), Acrylics were fun but I've recently rediscovered my love for the first medium I ever tried, Watercolours. They just suit me. Always seemed to fit the way I like to work but upon this recent love affair, I've also discovered that they are quite possible the hardest of the mediums to tame. T...
